"Shinkogura" is a luxury sake made in a limited edition to celebrate the 470th anniversary of the Yoshinogawa Brewery.

Soft and full, easy to drink, this sake uses Niigata water and rice and has been aged for 10 years to achieve an unequalled refinement.

It is also an opportunity for Yoshinogawa to collaborate with the traditional textile house Chiso, which is almost the same age.

Made of pure silk, 26 colours highlight vivid and expressive motifs, containing several layers of meaning.

The calabash, the main motif of this furoshiki and symbol of the Yoshinogawa Brewery, is the sign of success and happiness. Traditionally used in Japan as a medicine container, the calabash also symbolizes health and longevity.

There are 6 callebasses, because "6 callebasses" ("mubyo" in Japanese) is pronounced in the same way as the expression "without disease". The number of 6 callebasses is therefore a very good omen.

The other motif, the "kikusui", represents the chrisanthemum flower cradled by watercourses. This is also a good omen, indicating longevity. Kikusui are represented by the necklaces of the callebasses.

On the upper right and lower left callebasses, we can see a drawing of a boat

On the top right, tribute to the "river boats" that shaped Niigata's history with the transport of the tawara, these straw bags containing rice.

At the bottom left, the "boats of the seas", expressing our desire to move forward with expectations and hopes for the future.

We have always attached great importance to tradition, but this very luxurious product also symbolizes our hopes for the challenges that the future holds for us.

Comment from Yuki Minemasa, President of the Yoshinogawa House:

Koshi Tanrei sake rice made its market debut in 2007. That same year, our new brewery "Shinkogura" was completed. The sake created with this new rice in this new brewery was left to age at -5℃ for 10 years, developing both a sweet fullness and a lively passage in the mouth. Ten years emblematic for this exceptional sake, in the image of the love that the Yoshinogawa Brewery has for Niigata and its inhabitants, for whom we have been making our sake for 470 years thanks to the land, water and rice of the region. Blue was chosen to symbolize tradition.

Yoshinogawa Brewery

Built in 1548 in Nagaoka along the old Mikuni road kaidō, Yoshinogawa is the oldest sake brewery in Niigata Prefecture. Located south of the city of Niigata, Nagaoka is renowned for its fertile soils, pure water and exceptionally fresh local produce, the result of a particularly harsh winter climate, with world record snowfall. Since it can only take advantage of such advantages, Yoshinogawa uses only Niigata rice.

For more than 470 years, Yoshinogawa has been perpetuating the know-how of sake making while exploiting the latest technologies. This spirit of syncretism between tradition and new technologies is certainly one of the reasons for Yoshinogawa's secular success.
